Mitchell's Plain Music Academy
About
Founded in 2013 and formally established in 2014, Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy (MPMA) is a pioneering non-profit company (NPC) dedicated to transforming communities through high-quality music and arts education. Based in the heart of Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, MPMA has grown into a dynamic arts institution that offers accessible, holistic creative training to youth, adults, and aspiring artists from underserved and previously disadvantaged communities.
With a decade-long track record of impact, MPMA has become a cornerstone for music development and artistic expression in the Cape Flats and beyond.
The academy delivers structured programs across multiple disciplines to hundreds of students, including: Big Band and Ensemble Training, Vocal Coaching and Community Choirs, Dance Academy, Music Technology and Production, Instrumental Tuition (Piano, Guitar, Drums, Strings, Brass, etc), Songwriting and Composition Workshops and Accredited Music Theory and Practical Exams. MPMA believes in nurturing not only artistic excellence but also leadership, discipline, and purpose in every student. Many alumni have gone on to perform on national stages, gain university placements, and work professionally in the creative industries.
The Academy is proud to partner with local and international organisations, including the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the Betway Cares Foundation, and leading artists and educators to provide scholarships, job creation, and platforms for showcasing talent.
As it celebrates 11 years of meaningful service, MPMA continues to expand its reach—now working across more than 10 schools, training nearly 500 learners annually, and aiming to reach 1,000+ youth by 2026 through satellite campuses in Kraaifontein, Fisantekraal, and other regions.
Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy is not just an arts institution—it is a movement of hope, opportunity, and excellence.
