Pay it forward - Journey with Bernie

I am a Grade 11 Wynberg Girls’ High School student, passionate about the arts and equally determined to achieve academically. 

When I was in Grade 4, I won a Wynberg Girls’ Junior School scholarship, and have been a student at the Wynberg schools ever since. Through the extensive extracurricular programmes - particularly in the fields of dancing, singing, and acting - I have found numerous opportunities to contribute to the excellence for which our schools stand. These have included public performances at venues such as the V&A Waterfront and Baxter Theatre as a vocalist for our Jazz Band, and important school events such as our Major and Dramatic Productions, Dance Showcases, and Choir Festivals. When I was in Grade 9, I was the solo singer in the Anthem Project, where our grade wanted to promote awareness of the need for equality for the deaf. In 2019 I won the cultural pillar award - a floating trophy for outstanding achievement in the cultural pillar and received the 1961 Matric Trophy for Service and Commitment in Cultural Activities at the end of the year and this year, I have just been appointed student leader of the Cultural Pillar for 2021. Poverty has always been a struggle in my life, and COVID-19 has exacerbated that. The sole breadwinner in my family (my grandmother and guardian) has lost her job, and, because of the costs of living in Cape Town, is needing to return to her place of birth. If I were to go with her, this would mean a change of school and language of instruction in my final year of school. In order to remain in the hostel at Wynberg Girls’ High for my Matric year, I am needing to raise funds to cover the costs.

People's responses to this cause have been so generous. Never did I believe that so much would be raised so quickly. With my being so very close to achieving my financial goal, and my preparations for the concert well underway, I have decided to make this a "Pay it Forward Journey with Bernie" concert. There is no cost to see it, but if anyone would like to make a donation to attend it, I will undertake to put all proceeds into a fund to support fellow students, who might find themselves in a similar financial position.
