ABOUT

Westerford High School is proud to present District Six – The Musical.

A local classic, District Six was written in 1987 by Taliep Petersen and David Kramer and first performed at the Baxter Theatre in April of that year. Between 1987 and 1990, the musical was performed over 500 times with songs like 'Klop Klop' and 'My Broertjie My Bra' quickly becoming regulars on Cape Town radios; this despite the fact that four of the songs -- namely, 'Seven Steps of Stone', 'Galiema', 'The Law The Law' and 'Hester's Complaint' -- were banned by the SABC at the time.

The play was revived in 2002 at the Baxter and has been a regular showing on high school stages ever since.

District Six was declared a “whites-only” area by the Apartheid government in 1966. This moving story simultaneously tries to remember the multi-cultural community that lived in the district at the time as well as lament its destruction 54 years ago.

The cast of over 30 teenagers -- all singing and dancing to a live band -- will be showcasing their talents for the first week of April, 2020, in Westerford's very own Noel Taylor Hall.

Led by the impressive Abubakr Daniels (Nines), Michael Johnson (Henry), Grace Bagula (Mary), Seth Carstens (Cassiem), Zakariya Toefy (Cassiem), Khanyisile Macanda (Damaka) and Gloria Twahirwa (Damaka), this iteration of the much-celebrated musical promises to honour both the community it is remembering and the performances that have come before it.
