‘At Stake’ and Other Love Songs
At Stake is a protest song about femicide, the history of violence against women, and violence against the marginalised queer people. At Stake is also is also a love song.
Msaki has been exploring the idea of the protest song as a love song with her project Platinumb Heart. She has been trialing these songs out in live performances over the last two years in order to reach creative and emotional conclusions about arrangements and the questions that come with living in an #RIPwxmen nation.
Every year it is the same unbearably surreal questions asked in different ways: ‘Sifelani’?’, ‘Am I Next?’.
In the absence of answers these songs have been Msaki’s an attempt to keep a supple heart through heavy and callousing times and the painful hashtags that are becoming part of our story as a country.
The concert is much like the song , is an offering of that attempt to make a musical monument when the trending is over, an space to face or deposit the unprocessed, a way to reach for a layer of joy during mess and maybe even a moment healing together.
Nothing is normal here so this is not a normal concert.
Msaki is a singer songwriter, composer and curator of music and art events focused on alternative black artists. Her fragmented training includes graphic design, fine art, film photography and curation. She is signed to her own label Oneshushuday Artistry through which she released her EP Nalithemba in 2013 and SAMA nominated debut album Zaneliza in 2016. She has received a Standard Bank Standing Ovation Award for works staged at the National Arts Festival in 2017 as well as a Gold Award at the Cape Town Fringe. Her interest in theatre, visual art and poetry have seen her collaborate with Mandi Vundla, Francois Knoetze, Gabriel Goliath the current Young Artist of the year for Visual Art.
Her collaboration include songs with Black Coffee (nominated for a SAMA), Black Motion, Mobi Dixon, Kid X, Revolution, and her song with Prince Kaybee 'Fetch your Life' is the get-up-and-go-song that dominated the 2019 charts. She is part an inter-generational trio with Neo Muyanga and Madala Kunene.
