Farm Sanctuary Yoga Pop Up (2.5hrs of barnyard bliss)

Sat Nov 30, 10:00 - Sun Dec 1, 12:30

Farm Sanctuary SA

ABOUT

Join Nicci Cloete for a 2.5 hour yoga pop up in the beautiful barn at Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek.

A percentage of the proceeds will go towards raising awareness about modern factory farming practices, helping people in choosing compassion over cruelty and cultivating a better world for us all.

About the yoga:

This yoga pop up will take a shape similar to that of a Sivananda yoga class, with pranayama (breathwork), anything between 6 and 12 rounds of Surya Namaskar (sun salutations) and other asanas, before a long, juicy Savasana (a final relaxation pose designed to allow you to integrate the benefits of the practice into your body, mind and soul).

We will go slowly, with many opportunities to rest between the different parts of the class and the different asana (positions). If you are tired, you take a break, and join in again when you feel ready.

We start in a rest pose, before moving on to the breath work, where I will lead you in two types of pranayama: nadi sodona (alternate nostril breathing) and kapalabhati (shining skull breath).

Then we rest.

The sun salutations come next, and will be practiced with the accompaniment of a beautiful chanting recording, making it very rhythmic, hypnotic and meditative. It is cyclical so you can do just one round (once on each side) or three rounds, six rounds or twelve, depending on how your energy levels are on the day. This is the flowing, energetic, more "vinyasa" part of the class, designed to get your heart rate up, warm up your muscles and joints, and shift any stale or stagnant energy that the breathing hasn't managed to dislodge or free up. If you have injuries or are feeling fragile or tired, you can modify as we go along, but it is worth knowing that it will be a flowing sequence where you can drop from your mind into your body and get lost in the movement.

Then, we rest.

Next, we move on to the individual asanas: we will try to move through 12 however there is no rush, so we will be led by the pace and energy of the group, rather taking our time with the poses than rushing to tick them all off a list. The asana range from headstand to triangle to arm balances, and include forward folds, twists and more, but you don't need to be able to do any of these in order to join us - this class style lends itself to very beginners, and I will offer you whatever variations fit into your practice - whether it is the very basic preparation pose or an advanced expression of the asana.

We rest between each pose, and then right at the end of class, we sink into our final relaxation pose, that of Savasana, where I will lead you in a mindful progressive muscle relaxation practice as we settle into the sounds of a working farm where the happy animals are embodiments of the very first principle of yoga, AHIMSA - meaning non-violence.

To be clear: the class is suitable for all levels of practitioners. No experience necessary. Please note however that this is an extended class, rather than a workshop, so there will be a flow to the class that will need to take into account all the needs of the different students. Personal attention is always what I aim for but I will need to share the love between everyone :-)

I am a certified yoga teacher with well over 400 hours of formal training in Integral Vinyasa and Yin, gained over fifteen years in the USA, India and South Africa. My teachings are grounded in the philosophy of yoga, but my style is lighthearted, fun and accessible.

About the venue:

Established in 2016 by Joanne Lefson, Farm Sanctuary SA was officially opened on World Farm Animal Day 2 October 2016. Located in the renowned Franschhoek Valley of the Western Cape, the sanctuary serves to instill an awakened connection between farm animals and visitors and aims to inspire a positive change in the way society views and treats farm animals. There is an abundance of information available online that explores the tragedy that is industrialised animal farming and its merciless effect on the environment, our health and the welfare of farm animals. Get informed by visiting their website and join them in taking a stand against modern factory farming practices, choosing compassion over cruelty and cultivating a better world for us all.
