About Viewfinder's A Killing in the Winelands

In the months after the Marikana Massacre, the South African Police Service terrorized striking farm workers in the Winelands town of De Doorns. The violence culminated with the execution style police killing of Letsekang Thokoane, a young shopkeeper from Lesotho.

Viewfinder's debut documentary film A Killing in Winelands follows the journey of Letsekang's brother, Atang, as he travels back to De Doorns in search of answers. Why were the killers not held accountable? From the dusty scene of the murder in De Doorns six years ago, a paper trail leads us to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's head office in Pretoria to demand answers.

Last week Viewfinder brought you an exposé of IPID's cover-up of police brutality in South Africa. But, what does police impunity look like for the thousands of victims for whom justice is denied? This film - the latest installment in the "Killing the Files" series - brings us closer to understanding the human cost of police brutality and impunity in our society.
