Ilitha Labantu International Conference on Ensuring equal access to justice for victims of violence and abuse – rule of law in action

ABOUT

The conference will take place in Cape Town 27- 29 of November 2019. By promoting global and intersectional exchange and identifying the learning between countries and between sectors. 2020 is a pivotal year for the accelerated realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. As the global community marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and five years of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals, the moment is right to achieve irreversible and measurable progress towards this universal commitment to all women and girls, everywhere.

The conference will create a platform for representatives from States, justice sector, civil society and academia. It will galvanize political accountability and action; youth ownership of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; inclusive participation to ensure no one is left behind; and the expansion of the movement for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It will also develop a substantive contribution towards the implementation of the gender equality component of the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development by identifying approaches that can help deliver change.

The Conference will highlights the promising practices and policies to protect and prevent domestic and sexual violence, bringing together prosecutors, Judges, police, the field’s leading to domestic violence experts from across and chart the way forward for accelerating progress towards ending violence against women. It will also serve to generate renewed political commitment from Government to combat all forms of violence against women and girls.
