Robber's Pass connects the little town of Pilgrim's Rest to Ohrigstad, a long tarred road rich in history with a particularly scenic landscape that boasts wild horses and the odd monument.

Pilgrim's Rest itself has a rich history. Not only it is the birthplace of South Africa's gold rush but there are more than a couple of stories about robbers to add to the allure of the pass.

First is the Robber's Grave, perched above the town, where a thief – banished and convicted for stealing a tent - was shot as he returned to Pilgrim's Rest. But he isn't the robber for whom the pass is named, despite the grave's fame.

That's a different story, involving at least two highway robberies. The first when a stage coach was robbed of £10 000 worth of gold (no-one was convicted or even caught); the second happened in the same spot, 13 years later. For this robbery Tommy Dennison was jailed, only to return to Pilgrim's Rest post sentence to start the Highwayman's Garage.

The pass begins on the northern edge of Pilgrim's Rest and leads in a north-westerly direction into the foothills of the mountains. The initial 5 km follows a series of hairpin bends, best driven slowly, particularly as large trucks tend to use the pass. You will be lucky if you manage more than 40 km an hour.

You pass your first monument about 6.5 km up the pass – a cairn with a plaque that explains how the pass got its name.

As you reach the Morgenzon plantation, keep a watchful eye for wild horses, said to be the descendents of horses bred near Dullstroom for the stagecoaches from Pilgrim's Rest. But you will be lucky to spot them.

The Prospector's Trail, anything from two to five days' of hiking, starts up here. Fairly close by is the second monument – a plaque to commemorate the opening of the tarred pass in 1938, by the local MP who later spent time in prison for fraud. The third is a plaque for Jock of the Bushveld, but you may find it difficult to locate.

The highest point of the pass is at about 13 km, after which you descend in slow curves onto the grassy plains of the Ohrigstad River. The last 5 km are easy, along the bank of the river; Thabatswenya peak on your right.

Gods Window is so called for the panoramic view of the Lowveld more than 900 m down into lush indigenous forest clad ravine. The majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the private game reserves which have made the area one of South Africa's main wildlife destinations. God's Window is a small part of a 250km long earthwork of sheer cliffs and extravagant beauty. One can observe the hills and forests as far as the eye can see. In fact, it seems as if one can see forever!

Viewing sites are provided along the length of the spectacular Blyde River Canyon including God's Window, and there are numerous fantastic walks, hiking, horse and mountain bike trails. From the parking area a very steep stepped footpath along the edge of the escarpment leads to the actual view points.

Alanglade House Museum: This large and graceful double story building contrasts sharply with most of the other corrugated iron buildings in town and is testimony to the high status that mine managers of the period enjoyed. Today Alanglade is a period house museum and furnished with items from the early 1900's.

Guided tours of can be booked at the Information Centre - Monday to Sunday at 11h00 or 14h00.

WINERY INFORMATION

Here we promote just a few of the winefarms represented during our Wine Events. Follow our Facebook Page for the list of wineries exhibiting during the Pilgrim's Wine Route.

Boplaas WINES
Nestling between the vineyards on the outskirts of Calitzdorp, is Boplaas’ cellar tasting room, where friendly and knowledgeable staff will assist you with your tasting. They also offer a selection of local handmade produce in support of the local community.

Boschkloof WINES
Boschkloof was purchased in 1995 and named after the natural ravine or ‘kloof’ on the farm. The land consists of rolling hills and picturesque mountain backdrops. The soil consists mostly of decomposed granite and koffieklip. The original vineyards on the farm consisted mostly of Cape Riesling, but Jacques decided to remove it and plant better-suited cultivars like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Today Boschkloof is most renowned for their Syrah, especially the single vineyard bottling called Epilogue. It was the first red wine of South Africa to score 98 points by an internationally acclaimed critic.

Opstal WINES
Opstal has an array of quality estate wines under three different labels with Chenin blanc being our main focus. The three ranges are the fun, easy drinking and lifestyle Sixpence Range, the classic and food friendly Estate Range and the premium Heritage Range.
The Slanghoek valley is situated north / south with the Slanghoek mountains to the west and Badsberg east of the valley. Clay soil - where Cabernet Sauvignon is planted - is found on the eastern slopes of the valley.

LOUIS57 WINES
Louis Oosthuizen first ventured into the field of winemaking in 2009, lending his brand name, Louis57, to a hand-picked range of locally produced wines – all of which Louis personally tasted and selected. Each Louis57 Wine is outstanding in terms of balance and quality, enabling it to delight  even the most selective of wine connoisseurs.

Koelenhof WINES
Koelenhof winemakers take pride and pleasure in producing two ranges of wine, Koelenhof and Koelenbosch, each one with its own unique characteristics. In line with other Stellenbosch wines, their wines offer something for everyone. Ranging from easy-drinking wines for everyday enjoyment, to the elegantly packaged classical varieties, wine lovers are bound to discover Koelenhof wines that suit their needs and/or desires perfectly.

Deetlefs WINES
The second oldest family owned wine estate in South Africa, Deetlefs is steeped in seven generations of history since 1822. Situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountains in the Breedekloof Valley, in the small town of Rawsonville, the land has firmly become a part of the estate, vineyards and wine. Deetlefs currently produces three different ranges of wine, each with a unique story and specific purpose. The ranges include Deetlefs Familie, Deetlefs Estate and Stonecross. Since 1994 the focus has been on international markets and today more than 80% of the wine production is exported, taking Deetlefs to all corners of the globe.
