ABOUT

Stoicism has recently experienced a massive surge in popularity with supporters from Silicon Valley to Big Business describing it as: 'one of the best mind hacks ever invented'. Facebook pages with followers up to 25000 and annual events like Stoicon feed the demand for knowledge about this ancient philosophy. What's behind the sudden revival?

The rise of Stoicism is an indication that our age of rapid scientific and technological progress has not fulfilled or facilitated the flourishing of the modern psyche. As a result, many are turning to philosophy for consolation and a re-evaluation of questions about life, death, personal responsibility, suffering, and pain. Stoicism's appeal lies in the fact that it's not a philosophy detached from life; rather it's a way of life, a worldly practice that offers guidance as the individual passes through the vicissitudes of life.

What is it to be a Stoic? And why would one want to be a Stoic? This course is an introduction to the Stoic school of thought that was developed in ancient Greece. Understanding the history, fundamental principles and practice, alongside an examination of its warnings is crucial for a fuller and grounded understanding of Stoicism. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to implement the principles underlying this ancient philosophy in a very practical way.
