ABOUT

Dewar's Whisky are proud to present the launch of The Doers Club in collaboration with Studio Seven & Kapstadt Brauhaus.

There's a Cape Town proverb that goes "Let's connect for a drink sometime" and yet, only 1-2% of them ever actually happen. This got us thinking. How can we change this? The world already has enough talkers, we all know one. What the world really needs is more 'Doers.' So we thought, why not reward those that actually make it happen. Plus it helps people pronounce the name of one of the greatest whiskeys in the world, Dewar's , which is similar to Doers but with more dew. Like Mountain Dew.

So thanks to Dewar's Whisky, they decided to double down on our doing, and help us create a place, a club and series of get togethers for people who ' do' more than they 'talk' And so, "The Doers Club" was born. A global club , a community of people that make it happen, and go for that drink.

In a world of talkers, we've realised that it's the doer's that are actually, going to change the world.

So join us at the launch of the Doer's Club on Wednesday the 24th of July at Kapstadt Brauhaus, Clock Tower side of the V&A Waterfront.

We've invited two of our favourite artists, Freshlyground and funk , jazz-hop extraordinaire Astrafunk to help us launch, hosted by the incredibly funny Mr Mamello Mum-z Mokoena himself.

True to the Studio Seven experience, this evening will be in the form of a Story Session. Each artist, performer and host will share a bunch of stories, songs and skits that will take you on a journey that will make you laugh, perhaps cry, sing out and smile.

Plus Dewar's has brought a whole selection of craft cocktails, drink experiences and serving Dewar's neat at a special of 2 for 1 the whole evening.

And because it's our launch, we've made the entry FREE.

Headline: Freshlyground

Freshlyground formed in early 2002, and is made up of musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. In 2003 Freshlyground launched their debut album “Jika Jika” under their own Freeground Records label, cementing the band as one of South Africa’s most successful young acts.

Freshlyground’s second studio album, “Nomvula,” was recorded in 2004 and released by Sony BMG Africa. The single Doo Be Doo found instant success across radio stations, becoming the most played song in South Africa in 2005. The singles “I’d Like,” “Zithande,” “Things Have Changed” and the title track of the album “Nomvula”, followed “Doo Be Doo’s” success.

The album sold over 300 000 units in South Africa alone - earning it multi-platinum status. The success and broad appeal of the band was celebrated in November 2006 when Freshlyground won the MTV Europe Award in the category Best African Act. The award placed the band firmly on the international music map and earned them further recognition on home soil as significant South African cultural exports.

“Ma Cheri,” the band’s third studio album, released in 2007, followed “Nomvula.” “Ma Cheri” sold multi platinum in South Africa and the single Pot Belly became another major crossover success.

In 2009 Freshlyground completed four sold out tours in Europe and toured China, the United States of America and Canada for the first time, making the band one of a handful of South African acts to find international success across multiple continents.

In 2010 Freshlyground released the gold selling album “Radio Africa”. The band’s forth studio album broadcast their unique sound to the rest of the continent and the world.

While putting the finishing touches to “Radio Africa” in New York in February of 2010 the band teamed up with Shakira to produce the Official Song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup: “Waka Waka - This Time For Africa”.

Freshlyground performed “Waka Waka” live at the FIFA Kickoff Concert and at the World Cup closing ceremony in Johannesburg that was broadcast to over a billion people world-wide. “Waka Waka” has sold well over 3 million singles and reached number #1 on charts worldwide. The song is the most successful anthem in the history of the FIFA World Cup and has introduced Freshlyground and their music to a multitude of new fans across the globe.

The band went back into studio in 2012 to record their fifth studio album, “Take Me To The Dance,” with award winning studio engineer Dave Langemann and Grammy award winning producer Steve Berlin. The collaboration with DJ Headroom on the title track Take Me To The Dance displays the band’s flexibility and latitude. In 2013 the band released the album in the United States on the Word of Mouth label, this was followed by a US tour that included a show at the prestigious New York venue, The Apollo. The release of the album was immediately followed by a rave review on the popular NPR show, All Things Considered and topped the US iTunes World Music chart.

On a recent visit to South Africa in June 2013 during a speech at the University of Cape Town, President Barack Obama cited Freshlyground as an example of what South Africa has given the world.

Freshlyground released their sixth studio album Can’t Stop, produced by Tore Johanssen (Cardigans, OK Go, Franz Ferdinand) early 2018, which features the #1 hit single BLCK GRLS, and the anti-corruption song Banana Republic released on Freedom Day in South Africa.
