ABOUT

ArtsOnRED in collaboration with Radisson RED Hotel, Ovcorp Media & Entertainment & Brukman Consulting is celebrating Women's Month in style with SAMA award winning Claire Phillips.

CLAIRE PHILIPS is a true Cape Town and South African musical gem. The Belhar-born musician is not only an amazing vocalist, but also a renowned songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

Her first memory of singing is when she was in standard one (these days grade 3). The teacher played “Superwoman” by Karyn White and Claire started to sing along. The teacher stopped her and called the other teachers, who were amazed by the youngster’s voice.

Making music and playing instruments comes naturally for Claire. Her dad and the rest of the family are musicians and they had two bands, Family Affair and Rainbow Connection. She has always been surrounded by music and musicians and when the instruments were set up for her dad’s bands’ rehearsals she would grab the opportunity to hone her skills.

Her favourite instrument is the bass guitar because “there is just something sexy about it, that melodic heartbeat that keeps everything together”.

Claire studied business management at Tygerberg College after matric and then went to Prompt, Camillo Lombard’s music school. Lombard also took her under his wings and she became part of popular cover band Loading Zone.

Claire soon started writing her own songs and went solo with her first album recorded in Johannesburg. Claire and Patrick “Caramel” Hickey produced Say My Name which went on to win the South African Music Award (Sama) in 2007 for Best R&B/Soul Album.

Her second album By Request (2012) was also nominated for a Sama. Claire recently completed her new single “I wanna love You” and is planning to release the full album in March 2019.

Career highlights include performing alongside Lira, Zama Jobe, Freshlyground, Oskido, Loyiso Bala and releasing a single with Cape Town rapper YoungstaCPT. She also performed with international acts such as Eddy Grant and Dianne Reeves and toured Italy, Milan, the Netherlands and other European countries as well as African countries.

Playing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival twice is another career highlight. She regards Jill Scott as her absolute role model and hanging out with her and jamming with Robert Glasper and Gregory Porters “was just amazing”.

She also showed acting abilities in the 2018 hit movie “Ellen” and now wants to pursue an acting career.
