ABOUT

The Jazz on Red family are in for a treat come June 28 at the Radisson Red Hotel, Waterfront. That’s when veteran muso Sammy Webber will take to the stage to showcase his original and inspired music. Webber is a true son of Cape Town and he’s had his fair share of curve balls thrown at him. He was born in the Bo-Kaap and, at the age of two, he and his family were forced to move to Retreat, where he’s lived ever since. One of five siblings, he grew up with a single mother and hardship was not in short supply. It takes a special kind of musician to survive 40 years in the cut-throat South African music industry, but Webber is a special kind of musician – the type that perseveres against all odds and who tackles life’s challenges fearlessly. His love of music began in his teens, when he developed a passion for pop and rock – as he tells me the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were his favorite bands. However, as Webber grew older, his tastes matured and he started digging deeper into jazz and icons the likes of Al Jarreau started featuring on his radar. When he learned how to play the guitar, he cut his performing teeth with bands such as Inside Out, U-Turn, Fun-time and then Virtual Jazz Reality. Webber has played to appreciative audiences at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and to leisure seekers and jazz aficionados on a jazz cruise that made its way from Cape Town to Walvis Bay. Among his many highlights, he says, is the fact that he spent one glorious summer in Turkey touring the country and performing at holiday resorts to overseas tourists, where he was well received.

Other high-points in this talented man’s illustrious career includes meeting the Yellow Jackets and his bass idol, Marcus Miller. Webber has traveled the world, having performed in countries as diverse as Australia, Egypt and Tunisia, and he counts Allou April, Robbie Jansen and Errol and Alvin Dyers among his mentors. He also holds diverse musos such as Bra Hugh, Taliep Petersen, Zane Adams and Alistair Izobell in high esteem. His own wizardry on the bass guitar has won him many fans and his stint with Virtual Jazz Reality made him a household name, but here’s when another curve ball came in – being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2010. “It hampered my motor skills,” he tells me, adding “the first three or four years were tough and I sank down, but I knew I had to lift myself up. Self-pity doesn’t help. “I didn’t want to sit around moping and I made the decision to get back on track. The mind is an amazing thing,” he says. Webber’s motor skills have returned to the extent that he can play the guitar, but his eyesight has been severely affected, and is deteriorating, so he now uses special lights on the neck of his guitar when he performs. Webber has used his legendary skills to compose and produce a string of home-grown sounds, with two albums under his belt and a third on its way. He’ll be taking some music from his own stock when he struts his stuff at the Radisson Red Hotel.

Special guest appearance: SDG Cape Town Youth Band will accompany Sammy Webber on the night performing some of his original work as well as their own jazz music. Stan The Jazz man will be in the QUIBar + KTCHN spinning familiar jazz tunes on the one's and two's.
