Two Oceans Aquarium

ABOUT

Join us at the Two Oceans Aquarium on 24 May 2019 for a special screening of locally produced documentary Deep Blue \ Middle C. This genre-bending film was inspired by and takes place on the west coast of South Africa – a place of profound meaning and impact for filmmaker Bryan Little who, along with a group of his friends, spent 10 days and 10 nights re-connecting with the wild and enigmatic part of South Africa’s coast.

Says Bryan: "For 10days&10nights, we made a studio on the beach, in the Elands Bay dustbowl. From it our feral family of surfers, artists, conservationists, musicians, chefs, mystics and foragers made music with our true selves. Exploring the greatest force on earth: we ate our fill from the wilderness.”

A Fly on the Wall production, Deep Blue \ Middle C is a force of nature itself, collaborated on by some of the Cape’s best known ocean heroes – including underwater filmmaker Steve Benjamin, surfer Andrew “Roosta” Lange and coastal forager Roushanna Gray – and it has to be seen to be believed.

ABOUT THE TURTLE RESCUE PROGRAMME

Behind the scenes of the exhibits you have come to know and love, the Two Oceans Aquarium actively rescues, rehabilitates and releases stranded and distressed sea turtles as part of our broader conservation mission. With the support of an extensive network of organisations and volunteers along the Western Cape's coast, and many incredible donors, hundreds of sea turtles have been saved, reared to full strength and released back into the wild.

Loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest on the South African coast and are the most common patients of our clinic, but we also regularly rehabilitate stranded green, olive ridley and hawksbill sea turtles that wash up on our shores.

It costs the Aquarium about R27 per day to rehabilitate the average turtle – but few of them are “average”. From 25g hatchlings to 80kg heavyweights, dehydration to broken shells and picky eaters to energetic rascals, it takes a passionate and dedicated team to provide each turtle with the individual care and treatment it needs.
