The Listening Room - MPHB featuring Mel Botes
Pink Floyd Tribute & Original Tracks
Renowned South African guitarist, composer, and songwriter Mel Botes joins The Listening Room — an exclusive series of intimate concerts hosted by Music Pod with Hanlé Barnard and Triggerfish Brewing.
Join us for a special performance by Mel Botes performing original works as well as tracks by Pink Floyd, while showcasing his guitar artistry, accompanied by piano,
followed by an audience Q&A.
Mel Botes first rose to prominence in the early 1990s with his ambitious four-part rock opera. The first movement, About Time, was later staged at Sun City to great
acclaim. Another major work, David’s Confession, took seven years to complete and is regarded as a milestone in the history of South African rock — praised for its
musical depth and storytelling power. Influenced by Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Sting, and Mark Knopfler, as well as classical composers like Vivaldi and Beethoven, Mel Botes’ sound is a fusion of rock, blues, jazz, classical and Celtic elements. His technical mastery on the guitar is matched only by the emotional honesty of his compositions.
In 2001, Mel made a powerful entrance into Afrikaans music by winning the Vuurdoop Liedjieskryf Kompetisie and earning the GMT Songwriter of the Year
award for his album Oomblik van Waansin. He later contributed to the popular TV series Song vir Katryn, co-writing the soundtrack — including the award-nominated
song Katryn.
