What is #SpreadLove

After 31 years of democracy the south African youth still remains in a position that does not allow not even close to a quarter of the young people to be competitive globally and as a result, our economy keeps getting weaker and weaker so why don't we do things differently?

#SpreadLove is a campaign initiated to encourage members of our society to be active in helping to eradicate some of the problems that affect most South Africans by ourselves. There are three social areas of focus namely: Education, Hygiene and Malnutrition.

Education

The University of Pretoria’s centre for Evaluation and assessment conducted a study that was also published on Sunday Times live which revealed that 80% of South African grade 4 learners cannot read and South Africa falls below the internationally recognized level of reading literacy. It was also revealed that learners that are being taught in any other South African language (learners in remote rural areas and townships) are the worst performing and cannot reach the lowest benchmark.

Hygiene

Stellenbosch University Law Clinic has found that about 30% of girls in South Africa do not attend school when they are menstruating because they cannot afford sanitary products and According to the UN’s Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) which conducts in-country programmes to support good menstrual health, 3.7 million Estimated number of girls in South Africa do not have access to pads.

"Some girls are unaware of safe and hygienic sanitary material options and resort to using unsafe materials that could pose potential health risks to them causing infections, smell, and discomfort," Virginia Kamowa, the WSSCC's technical expert on menstrual hygiene management (MHM), told Global Citizen.

Malnutrition

15% of South African infants are born with a low birth weight and 5% of South African children are so underweight they are considered to be a “waste”. Since the 1990s South Africa's malnutrition problem has remained stable and it is estimated that South Africa loses about US$1.1 billion every year in GDP to vitamin and mineral deficiencies arising from malnutrition.

#SpreadLoveXAMPD Studios is an event that will take place at AMPD with intentions of collecting great amounts of donatable items. The even will be structured in a way that will allow attendees to be part of the conversation where we address something that affects everyone in the modern-day South Africa,

This is a free event but each person that is attending the event is required to bring an item for one or more social area of focus:

·        Malnutrition- Food Stuffs especially Baby food.

·        Education- Reading materials which will help improve the language and comprehension of learners in lower primary, especially in underprivileged schools (could be fiction or non-fiction).

·        Hygiene- Sanitary towels, Deodorants, toothbrushes and bar soaps.

These items are then donated to different NGOs and shared equally as the organisations are already doing the groundwork within these communities.

All donated items will be donated to NGO's that are already actively doing the groundwork in different communities.
