ABOUT
Jazz singer, songwriter, voice over artist and radio presenter Spha Mdlalose, makes her much anticipated return to the basement. Born in KZN and later relocated to CPT with her family, Spha is no stranger to big and intimate stages such as Cape Town International Jazz festival, both as as solo artist and alongside US soul singers Allan Stone and Patti Austin. Spha has also toured with Grammy award winners Josh Groban and gospel sansation , Israel Houghton Bearned. Spha earned her stripes at the University of Cape Town’s South African College of Music in 2006, majoring in Jazz vocal performance. She has managed to balance her classical Jazz vocal style with an innovative take allowing her music to always be original, sensual and always timeless.
To date, Spha has performed alongside notable artists like Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Micasa, Oliver Mtukudzi, Neo Muyanga and also featured on numerous albums including that of SAMA award nominee trumpet player Lwanda Gogwana, “Mbokodo Award- winner” for ‘Best Female in Jazz’, Thandi Ntuli, virtuoso bass player Benjamin Jephta and saxophonist Sisonke Xonti.
In 2019 Mdlalose released her debut solo album entitled “Indlel’eyekhaya” to much acclaim. The album was nominated for 3 South African Music Awards, including Best Jazz Album and Best Female Artist. The album won her 2 Mzantsi Jazz Awards for Best Jazz Album and Best Newcomer.
