Thu Aug 8, 15:00 - Sun Aug 11, 15:00

Vegkop Monument and Museum

ABOUT

Overview:

The Big Vegkop Star Party is an initiative launched by a few star-gazing enthusiasts to make star gazing accessible to everyone and to promote Vegkop as a prime astronomy location. The funds raised from this initiative will go towards the preservation of the Vegkop Monument.

Vegkop is one of the most important historical sites in the Free State and South Africa. It is a site of special significance for all South Africans. The unique beauty and seclusion of the site captivate many and attract numerous visitors from all over each year. The site belongs to the community of Heilbron and is managed and maintained by the community.

Vegkop is frequented by many astronomy hobbyists and advanced astrophotographers due to the pristine quality of the night sky the venue offers.

About the event:

The event is aimed at anyone interested in astronomy or star gazing, who wants to know more about the topic, or who wants to experience the exceptional night sky of Vegkop. Whether you are interested in the stars, an enthusiast, or an advanced amateur astronomer, this event is meant for you. You don't need a telescope to attend the event, but you are encouraged to bring yours along. The more telescopes, the merrier the star party!

Friday evening will be an informal, open star-gazing evening. Bring your telescope and questions, there will be volunteers to assist you with your telescope.

Saturday will be filled with exhibitions, workshops and presentations, food stalls and other exciting activities, followed by a formal show and tell by one of our country’s leading astronomy experts on Saturday evening.

You are welcome to join us already from Thursday evening.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

To make the event more enjoyable for everyone, we request that all attendees bring red flashlights, instead of normal white lights. Alternatively, place a red filter over your white flashlights. This is because white light interferes with your eyes’ ability to adapt adequately to the night sky.

Camping facilities:

The site has 78 camping spots, and 34 of them have electricity points. There is a clean ablution block with showers available. The ablution block has a wheelchair-accessible room and a family room.

Camping sites with electricity: R270 per night (4 people)

Camping sites without electricity: R200 per night (4 people)

Day visitors: R50 per person for a weekend pass (children under 12 – no entry fee)

Fireplace facilities:

Because Vegkop is a protected heritage site and farming area, open fires at the campsites are not permitted. There is a dedicated braai area for you to make use of. Fires will be provided between 16:00 and 18:00. Gas braais are permitted at the campsites.

Day visitors guide:

Bring chairs, blankets, food, comfortable and warm clothing, a red flashlight, your telescope and camera, and any astronomy questions you may have.
