ABOUT

On Sunday, April 21st at 3PM we welcome South African flautist Merryl Neille and pianist Eugene Joubert to Northwards House where they perform their programme entitled “Water’s Tale”.

Flautist Merryl Neille has performed in South Africa, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States of America, and Australia as a member of numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles. She completed post-graduate degrees at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (MMus), and the University of Michigan, USA (DMA). As a composer, Merryl was a prize winner of the Flute Society of NSW Composition Competition for Winter Solstice for Flute and Piano (2020). The work has since gone on to win a SAMA for Best Classical Album African Bird, recorded by Khanysile Mthethwa and Peter Cartwright. She has since been commissioned to write several works for Karen North's Allegro Music Publications, Lyrical Flute Legends, Inspiring Flute Solos and Lyrical Flute Encores. An Australian resident, Merryl serves on the committee of the Flute Society of New South Wales and is the director of the Australian Flute Festival.

Pianist Eugene Joubert graduated from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music with a MMus degree in collaborative piano. He regularly appears for the Chamber Music Collective and the Lowveld Chamber Music Society, as well as at the St Francis and Wakkerstroom Music Festivals.

“Water’s Tale” explores all the attributes of water as it appears in nature with a selection of lyrical works for flute and piano. Carl Reinecke’s Sonata, Op 167, entitled “Undine”, beautifully captures the original telling of the Little Mermaid with heartbreaking melodies and fast-moving passages. Daniel Dorff’s Sonata “Three Lakes” deftly captures the beauty of three picturesque lakes in the states of Pennsylvania and Maine, USA within a compelling contemporary musical framework. Shorter works by Emma Greenhill, Ian Clarke, Tori Amos, and Philippe Gaubert completes this programme.

We cannot wait to welcome you at Northwards House on Sunday, April 21st, at 3 PM for an afternoon of exquisite beauty in the company of the world’s most beautiful music.
