The Wilds – Revival & Restoration

The Wilds

ABOUT

“The Wilds” in Houghton is one of the oldest parks in the city but was long regarded as a dangerous and overgrown place to be avoided. However, in the last 10 years, volunteers have been working with the City of Joburg to restore the Park to its proper place as one of the city’s must-see heritage sites.

Rediscover the natural flora along well tended paths, waterfalls and ponds. Along the way look out for the owl, bushbaby and kudu sculptures, and celebrate the efforts of those involved in restoring this 99-year old park to a magical place that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Join guide Arj van Zwieten and Martine de la Harpe - horticulturist and landscaper who has been  involved in the rehabilitation at The Wilds - on this walking tour with a special focus on the East side of the park which has a typical Highveld condition.

Remember to pack lunch and join us for a picnic after!

Please ensure you have good walking shoes as the walkways are uneven, and bring a hat, sunblock and water.  There are some uphill climbs so some fitness is needed.
