We were sent here by History - Shabaka and the Ancestors - Johannesburg

Arts on Main
ABOUT
"Mr. Hutchings has said he hoped the band would capture some of the “restless energy” of Johannesburg, a metropolitan but deeply working-class city, where much of the arts activity takes place underground. “We Are Sent Here by History” is intended specifically as both a lament and an embrace of the coming climate apocalypse.
“We’re talking about imaginative structures, we’re talking about how we perceive things and how we process information that’s given to us — how we see ourselves in the sense of how we relate to history,” New York Times February 2020.
Shabaka and the Ancestors are embarking on their last tour for the foreseeable future. And what better way to end the journey than to visit the very city the band was birthed. This is a call to the Johannesburg underground to come enjoy and celebrate this momentous moment of firstly the Ancestors closing their chapter in the book of South African and transatlantic jazz and secondly the last visit on saxophone from our son of the soil Shabaka Hutchings.
