ABOUT

Three Great Romantics - Borodin, Rachmaninoff & Tchaikovsky.

In the second concert of the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's 25th Anniversary year, the ECPO joins orchestras worldwide in celebrating the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's birth. And there is no better way to mark this than with his Piano Concerto No 2, performed by internationally acclaimed pianist, Nina Schumann.

Borodin's Polovtsian Dances open the concert, his bright tone colours and energetic rhythms entirely suitable for creating a feeling of celebration and enthusiasm. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5 explores the agonies and ecstasies of fate, from a bleak funeral march to its powerful conclusion, which has made it one of the most popular symphonies.

The concert is conducted by Jacobus de Jager, winner of the 2022 SA National Conducting competition, and a recent semi-finalist at the International Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors competition in Salzburg.
