ABOUT

Honour1976 Walk, part of the #FirstThursdayNightWalk series, takes you through a heritage journey, highlighting the history of #Soweto1976, and also, the year #1976 in our National Liberation Heritage Story. While 1976 holds a specific significance in the nations liberation history for Soweto, 1976 was an important year of significance on a national level. In 1976, Cheryl Carolus was detained for 5 months. Already politically active and a member of the South African Students Organisation (SASO), Carolous went on to be part of the 1981 schools boycotts and was instrumental in the formation of the United Democratic Front.

#FunkItImWalking aims to make it safe enough for a womxn to walk at any time of day in any condition. Through this initiative, social entrepreneur, creative and development economist Nomsa Mazwai establishes social enterprises that enable the safety of women and vulnerable groups, primarily in townships and urban areas.

In Soweto, #FunkItImWalking offers night tourism experiences with local Community Policing Forums (CPF’s) and is also currently raising capital to establish a large scale recycling plant with a community reward system (#FunkyBank) to reward at source waste separation, recycling ultimately deterring communities from littering and polluting the environment. It is not true that we are not safe because we are poor, we are poor because we are not safe.

We are who we have been waiting for.

#FunkItImWalking, let's walk to freedom.
