ABOUT

An enchanted weekend of amahubo, poetry, Nguni neosoul and folk music splendour with the Mbuso Khoza Institute and iJadu Le Afrika.

The Mbuso Khoza Institute for Culture presents iJadu Le Afrika Festival, which takes place on 26 - 28 May 2023, at Bat Centre, in Durban.

This is an exciting 3 day music festival that allows audiences to traverse the ancient mode of amahubo and their eclectic modern-day interpretation and fusion with various genres by vibrant artists of the Institute. It will equally be a weekend that births magical worlds through poetry and storytelling.

The festival, in its second instalment, is led by award winning vocalist and songwriter, Mbuso Khoza. Khoza is a rare musical talent from Eshowe in KwaZulu Natal who has taken the world music arena by storm and who has opened an institute as means to impart music heritage to young artists.

The festival also features a colourful lineup of artists of the institute who are equally culture activists who have taken ownership of the amahubo journey, which includes:

  • Nomangungu (storyteller, poet, world and folk musician)
  • Anella Ngwenya (Nguni neo soul musician)
  • Fisi Miraba (Nguni neo soul musician)
  • Nandi Mzobe (Nguni neo soul musician)
  • Ijadu Le Afrika Ensemble (amahubo ambassadors)

ABOUT THE MBUSO KHOZA INSTITUTE FOR CULTURE

The Mbuso Khoza Institute for Culture is an NPC that safeguards intangible and tangible heritage. Amongst the major projects that it has successfully curated is the battle of ISandlwana Lecture (The Musical) which has been turned into a full stage production hosted by The State Theatre in Pretoria; IHubo which was staged at The Playhouse Company in Durban; Amahubo symposium in partnership with the Wits School of Art, ISandlwana Walk, King Dinuzulu Lecture, and the first instalment of iJadu Le Afrika Festival which was staged in 2022 at the Bat Centre.

The institute is currently involved in a heavy fundraiser programme, as means to source funds to build a physical institute. Your support of this festival and many of the shows lined up would be in support of this worthy cause, securing the future of indigenous music in South Africa.
