Brown Baby Music presents Madala Kunene x The Brother Moves On x Guy Buttery on the 22nd of April 2023 at The Nest in New Doornfontein
In celebration of the true authentic musical experience Brown Baby Music presents a series of curated gigs celebrating South African live music but with a particular focus on the legendary as here with us now and affirming the statement that our time is now.
What better way to start proceedings than with the father of South African guitar. Madala Kunene affectionately known as "Bafo" is one of the fathers of the South African guitar, a living legend born in Kwa-Mashu near Durban who began busking on Durban beachfronts at the age of seven years old. Madala has graced international stages representing the purity of the acoustic South African guitar with a deep reverence and love for the youth of the alternative music scene. This love can be seen in the onstage and offstage relationship that Bafo has with Guy Buttery, another featured artists for this show. Guy Buttery is a South African musician primarily known as a guitar player. Cited as “one of South Africa’s most influential artists over the past decade" by The Sunday Independent, Buttery's distinctive acoustic style is influenced by traditional South African culture, music and instrumentation and is something graceful and authentic to behold. A recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award Guy is a decorated artist with a very special relationship with Madala Kunene.
Our last troupe of artists to join us for this celebration is the Brother Moves On. The Johannesburg Collective sold out at their Berlin Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival and the prestigious Brussels Flagey in November 2022. The band have just released a ten track sophomore album entitled "S/he Who Feeds You" on Native Rebels Recordings(UK) to rave reviews worldwide. The album features a track that tributes Madala Kunene entitled "Ta Tom" , Shabaka Hutchings has remixed this track and it is due for release on the 21st of April 2023 to mark this special occasion in TBMO releases. This series celebrates that as the beginning of a recording and touring process between these artists so you can expect a moment at the show where all the artists are onstage.
