ABOUT

Welcome to The Afriquan Film Club, a space where we'll be exploring fascinating African Cinema and having fun and engaging discussion surrounding the African Cinematic Landscape.

Happening at Actors Spaces on 44 Stanley, our second club evening is themed around The Pop Cultural Preservation of Our History. This exploration will occur on the 25th March 2023 and will have a pair of screenings.

#1 The Bubbling Culture: A series exploring bustling creative sub-cultures within South Africa's contemporary entertainment eco-system with stories and interviews from trailblazing players within the space. We'll be premiering a full episode looking into Amapiano's progression into world consciousness.

#2 Music is My Life: Music is My Life tells the story of South African musician, the late Joseph Shabalala, including his rise  to international fame with his band Ladysmith Black Mambazo in the wake of their contributions to  Paul Simon’s massively successful Graceland album. Bathed in Ladysmith’s powerful and deeply  beautiful music, the documentary covers the full breadth of the singer’s life, from his early years in  rural South Africa to the height of Shabalala’s global success to his passing in 2020 at the age of 79.

We'll also be having a lively discussion around The Pop Cultural Preservation of Our History that will be moderated by DJ Sabby
