A stunning selection of works written for horn and piano from the Romantic and Modern eras. The programme will take the listener on a journey of the imagination, evoking a sense of travelling through various vistas and perhaps even reflections on times past.



Shannon Armer was born and raised in Ohio, USA. She received a BMus degree (cum laude) in Music Education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1994, and completed her MMus degree with distinction in Horn Performance at the University of Pretoria in 2006. In addition, she was awarded the Doctor of Music degree in Music Performance from the North-West University in 2022.

In 1995, Shannon came to South Africa to take up the position of Second Horn of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (now KZNPO), and was promoted to the Principal Horn position later that same year. She auditioned for and was appointed as Principal Horn of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra of Pretoria (NAPOP) in 1998, a position she held until the closure of the State Theatre in June 2000.


After freelancing for 7 years, Shannon became the Principal Horn of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008. She has performed in a freelance capacity with most of the orchestras in South Africa as well as others further afield such as the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra in Windhoek and the Dar Choral Society Orchestra in Dar es Salaam. Shannon has also been engaged as a soloist with the KZNPO, NAPOP, the Free State Symphony Orchestra and the JPO.

Shannon currently teaches the brass pupils at Waterkloof House Preparatory School and Pretoria Boys High School, but spends most of her time working as a freelance horn player. An active recording artist ad chamber musician, she is a founder member of the JOZI Brass Quintet, the UMOYA Wind Quintet and the Highveld Horns.

Married since 2000 to Maj. Lorin Armer, a bassoon player and Assistant Director of Music of the South African Air Force Band, the couple have 2 daughters (15 and 17) who play the violin, piano, drums and electric guitar between them and are actively involved in The Kingdom’s Lab Hip Hop Dance Studio.


Eugene Joubert holds a Master’s degree in Collaborative piano from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Notable performances include works such as the Quartet for the End of Time (Messian), Sonata for two pianos and percussion (Bartòk), as well as the clarinet trios of Beethoven, Brahms, Glinka and Muczynski. In 2007 he made his debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Other international performances include Switzerland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Serbia, the US and Denmark.

Eugene made his European debut in 2012 with performances of Bernstein’s Candide in Switzerland in collaboration with Reakopana Opera and L’avant-scène Opéra, Neuchâtel. Since this time, he has appeared in numerous productions for Big Wig Opera, TUT Opera and Sempre Opera.

An avid performer of chamber music and lieder, Joubert is currently head of Piano Studies at St Mary’s School in Waverly, Johannesburg.
