THE HOBBIT

“I have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them.”

J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit is coming to National Children’s Theatre from 17 APR–21 MAY at NCT and on tour to schools.

This production contains the best elements of adventure, fantasy, humor, unforgettable characters, and especially courage. In the words of Bilbo, “Go back? No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!”

The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a simple home-loving hobbit, whose life takes an exciting turn when he is summoned to prepare for a voyage by the wizard Gandalf. Bilbo, reluctant at first, finally acknowledges a call to duty and joins a band of dwarves under the leadership of Thorin Oakenshield, on a quest to reclaim their kingdom as well as recover stolen treasure from the feared dragon Smaug.

Their formidable and challenging adventure has them battling through wind, rain, hail and thunderstorms as they traverse the Misty Mountains, narrowly escaping Trolls, Goblins, Wolves and Giant Spiders—and the not-so-clever creature Gollum. Finally, Bilbo alone faces the guardian of the treasure, the most feared dragon in all Middle Earth: Smaug .

Forced to think and act quickly, Bilbo outsmarts many of his opponents (including Smaug), displays his fearlessness and proves himself essential to the quest. His unfailing courage and bravery unites the citizens of Middle Earth as they prepare to battle greedy goblins. A true hero is born.

“Bilbo reminds us that even the humblest of us can rise up and be a hero in the battle against greed and corruption,” says Moira Katz, CEO of National Children’s Theatre. “This production delivers all the highlights of Tolkien’s book, from wizards to dragons to Gollum and the famous ring. At the same time, it’s the kind of creative, imaginative event that can only happen in the theatre.”

"There's no better way for young audiences to experience and appreciate the magic of theatre than when imagination and theatrical inventiveness collide," says director Alan Swerdlow. "The Hobbit is loved and revered by audiences of all ages, and the dynamic actors and creative team have stepped up to the challenge of bringing Tolkien's gripping adventure to life on the stage. We've used everything that came to hand to tell the story - I'm only sorry that we haven't quite managed to find space for a kitchen sink. But I'm working on it!"
