ABOUT
Marcus Wyatt is a trumpet player, composer,
arranger and bandleader from Gqeberha in the
Eastern Cape, and has been an influentual and
important figure on South African musical
landscape for more than two decades -
respectful of the past, yet always moving forward
without fear of twisting boundaries.
He has performed around the globe, and worked
with an impressive array of musicians, from
Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, Manu Dibango
and The Metropole Orkest, to Maria Schneider,
John Faddis, Bheki Mseleku, Lionel Loueke and
Steve Turre. Wyatt is a South African Music Award
(SAMA) winner, and besides his homeland, has
appeared on festivals and in venues in over 20
different countries.
In 2022 Marcus directed the Grammy Award
winning Metropole Orkest in a critically acclaimed
performance at the iconic Royal Albert Hall, for
the celebrated BBC Proms series. He recently
released his 9th solo album “Into Dust/Waltz for
Jozi”, a live recording of his ZAR Jazz Orchestra
at The Orbit Jazz Club (Johannesburg). The Big
Band also shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis’
Jazz at Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra on the
opening night of the Joy of Jazz Festival 2019.
Wyatt also leads ‘The Blue Notes Tribute Orkestra’
, which pays homage to the music of legendary
South African Jazz group The Blue Notes, and also
runs the celebrated 12 piece Afrobalkan ensemble
‘Bombshelter Beast’.
