ABOUT

Join INSTOPPs mentorship session on Managing defiant behaviour in paediatric clients. Difficult/defiant behaviour presents itself in different forms. It can either be part of a developmental phase or it can be pathological. This session will specifically focus on pathologically defiant behaviour and the “very difficult” child.

Marna will give a quick intro on the definition and diagnostic criteria of defiant behaviour, but will then focus on basic principles in sessions – the “how’s” and the “what’s” when a child’s behaviour gets out of hand – even to such an extent where he/she poses a danger to him-/herself and to you as a therapist.

Even though these children are usually not a therapist’s “favourite”, we might be the only people willing to help them and this session will give you a starting point for achieving therapy goals in spite of extremely difficult behaviour.

This is your opportunity to ask questions and get professional advice from a skilled person who is active in the field, giving you detailed insights and mentoring you through the challenges you are facing in your practice.

Who should attend:

Occupational Therapists and other health care professionals who want to learn how to work with children that have sometimes difficult or defiant behaviour.

About the presenter:

Marna graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in 2009 and completed her community service in Middelburg, Eastern Cape. It was during this time that her passion for children with neurological disabilities started and she decided to enrol in the Bobath paediatric NDT course which she completed in 2012.

Ever since, her passion for children with neurological diagnoses just grew and as she continued to gain experience, she realised how important early intervention is.

She co-owns a paediatric OT practice and in collaboration with a speech- and play therapist strives to not only look after the child, but support the entire family structure

She also has a great passion for training and education, and one of her long-term goals is to transfer appropriate- and up-to-date knowledge to teachers, parents and colleagues in the medical field.
