10 years have passed since Chukkachurri - that tiny, double-volume 'beat bar' with the funky name and unrivalled atmosphere - opened its doors to a blossoming subculture of discerning music lovers!

In early 2012 an event producer & restauranteur walked into a bar...and teamed up to turn a quaint, yet dead space into something more than just that, and despite their challenges, a whole new animal was born in a time when the local club scene was nil and a new era of dance music was filtering through from abroad onto local shores. Within just a few months a new stomping ground was born for those with a penchant for deep, uplifting music and a casual, unpretentious atmosphere.

A typical night at 'Chukka' (as it was affectionately known) was nothing short of sweat-soaked, sardine-like fans atop the glass dance-floor & couches, with fingers ticking the ceiling until the last beat dropped at 4am. No other establishment was offering this style of deep house music and the house/techno festival movement was yet to flourish in Cape Town.

In 2013 stringent 2am liquor laws were imposed on all late-night venues of the Western Cape, coupled with a strict approach to sound pollution, leaving little room to move for what was essentially an 'after-hours' club. Chukkachurri closed its doors in January, 2014.

10 years later we shall R E G E N E R A T E this stomping ground and bring this institution for a generation of music lovers back to life, in a location just 2 doors away from the original Chukkachurri Bar (Cobern St, De Waterkant).

The Soundtrack: in true 'regeneration' style we will be celebrating the djs and the music that epitomised that era. Chukkachurri played host to many of the country's top djs and producers and for the period that its doors were open a breeding ground for new opportunities in Cape Town were cemented,. Poignant times that were cogs in the wheel of an industry that boomed beyond just a small-town subculture.
