CAT Garden Route

About

Stray cats, feral cats, abandoned cats, and even owned cats suffer in South Africa.

The CAT Assistance Team (CAT) works to end that suffering on the Garden Route.

We believe sterilisation is the key to creating a healthy and manageable cat population.

Our mission – trap-neuter-release – has kept our feral and semi-feral cat population under control, but every sterilisation is vital. Without them, one cat can have multiple litters. This turns cats from furry friends to hated pests and increases disease, neglect, and cruelty.

We work with private vets and fellow welfare groups to sterilise, feed and, where possible, rehome cats.

We sterilise approximately 800 to 1,000 cats per year.

Every sterilisation, every treatment (for example, we screen for feline AIDS and leukaemia) and every packet of food costs money. Your donation will help us combat cruelty and neglect, fight the spread of disease, and stop starvation.

Cat sterilisations cost an average R500 (€30/$30/£25). Conditions such as biliary must be treated before sterilisation, which also requires funding. Associated costs include food, cat litter, fit-for-purpose cages, and petrol.

All of our staff are volunteers and do not receive wages.
