The Donkey Derby is like a miniature Durban July, J&B Met, Polo etc. Instead of real horses, wooden donkeys are used. The normal race track is substituted by using a block system which is placed in the middle of the hall.

There are generally 6 donkeys to a race, which will do between 6/8 races. During the evening, races will be run and before each race the auctioneer auctions the wooden donkeys off. The highest bidder owns the donkey for the race. This can be done individually or per table. The owner decides who the jockey will be for that particular race.

The Donkeys run at the "throw" of the dice. The "coloured" dice determines which donkey (different colours) will move forward and the numbered dice indicates how many blocks the donkey moves forward. 

Now here is the most prominent part, the owner of the winning donkey will receive a percentage of the total amount of cash bet on that race. Therefore before commencement of each race, everyone or anyone can buy a ticket/s from the bookies for their favourite donkey or donkeys. When and if your donkey wins, you receive a percentage of the total amount bet, divided by the number of tickets sold.

Without information overload, all we can say is, if you play your donkeys right you could win a lot of money!!

And even more exciting, MAY THE BEST HAT WIN!! Wear your most extravagant and over the top or crazy hat!!
