PRACTICE WALK 5 - GROTTO

This is the official practice walk for all walkers registered to walk the official Walks in March & April 2023. 

• Route: Leave from Grotto Beach, Hermanus; walk towards De Kelders, Cape Nature Reserve, along Walker Bay beach; turn at 3km to complete 6km; OR walk further (to Sopie's Klip) to complete 12km; OR walk another 10km to turn back and complete 20km.
• Distance: 6km | 12km | 20km
• Time: 5-6 hours
• Terrain: Sandy beach
• Rest stops: Sopie's Klip (& @10km)
• Meeting point: Grotto beach parking lot (to register) |
• Time: Registration from 7:30am Starting @ 08:00

*Please note that the tide table has been taken into consideration to determine the date of this walk

The Official Practice Walk is hosted as a fundraising opportunity for the Beneficiary for 2023, as voted for by all the registered L2L walkers. The event is advertised in local media who encourage the local community to come and support this initiative.

A few things to remember:

• This is a full day hike - please bring along your own water (3L), snacks and lunch
• There is no fresh water along the route
• Ensure you are protected against sunburn
• Wear your comfortable hiking shoes - gaiters are recommended (protects against sand in shoes)
• In your backpack you might also bring a rain jacket / poncho / small first aid kit / sun hat / costume / small towel / toilet paper or tissues / bags for rubbish
• Practise with a 'loaded' backpack - as you will be wearing it for 4 days for 100km

The routes are chosen for the practice walks to help registered Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies prepare for the Official 4-day 100km Walk. The Official Walks in 2023 is aimed at raising funds for IZIBUSISO - a Safe house in Zwelihle for abandoned babies.

Lighthouse2Lighthouse ladies' (NPO 169-860) is a non-profit organisation focused on raising funds for charities in the Overstrand community.

We have raised just over R6million since 2006 and, in doing so, helped more than 20 charities in our community. The registered Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies that walked in 2022 were able to raise funds for the main beneficiary Hermanus Child and Family services (R550,000) and SOFCA (R 450,000)

An additional +/-R40,000 was also donated to the different charities that applied to be the main Beneficiary - including Kleinmond Animal Welfare (KAWS), Waldorf Hermanus, IZIBUSIZO, Grootbos Foundation, Creative Skills Factory, Handevat Musiek Projek, Pebble Project, Panthere Africa and Hawston Health and Wellness Organisation.

Money cannot be raised without the support of our walkers – albeit the registered Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies or family or friends or community members. Your small contribution will make a big difference to the communities impacted by the charities we support in the Overstrand.
