Penned by the late Fiona Coyne, a South African playwright and the presenter of the South African television series, ‘The Weakest Link,’ we are delighted to present her internationally acclaimed play, ‘Careful.’
Originally written for the Artscape Writing Programme, Fiona wrote this play for the doyenne of SA Theatre, Diane Wilson, who consequently won the Best Actress award playing Jean at the 2009 Dublin Play Festival. Fiona was nominated for Best Playwright.
The talented and experienced Johann Van Der Merwe, (Bedside Manners) directs this two hander and the play tells the story of two women, who on the outside, appear to be totally different.
As the story unfolds, the actress, Jean, played by Gillian Vosloo, faces the most daunting challenge in her dwindling career. Her role is that of a gay woman so she calls upon the only lesbian woman she knows, a theatre critic, Leila, played by Carolyn Venter, to guide her in portraying a character she is totally unfamiliar with. The two women embark on a conversation that becomes a battle of wits where the line of reality and the stage become blurred. The dialogue tackles stereotypes, naïveté and tolerance and is a mesmerising 90 minutes.
The flashes of humour, the incisive words and the dawning understanding are totally relevant today and offer an insight into how we are influenced in our judgement of people. An evocative piece of theatre which richly deserved its acclaim.
