ABOUT

“Residents of Pretoria have a good appreciation for jazz which older generations pass to the younger ones as a way of restoring love for the genre. There is no way saxophonist Nhlanhla Mahlangu could not have crossed paths with jazz. The 32-year-old husband, father, composer, arranger and producer was born in the township of Mamelodi east of the capital city. His dad would play vinyl records of different artists such as Brian Adams, Gene

Ammons and Abdullah Ibrahim.” As masterfully introduced by Zamindlela Zama of Figure It Out Media & Communications.

Nhlanhla Mahlangu is now a New York based saxophonist, composer, arranger, producer and sound designer. Following the release of his debut album DaniMali in 2019, he moved to the Big Apple and found his place in the

inner circle of the jazz scene. He has had the privilege of being mentored by some of the world’s leading jazz exponents of our time. Some of whom are: Stefon Harris, Wynton Marsalis, Miguel Zenon, Gary Bartz, Jaleel Shaw, Donny McCaslin, Walter Smith III and Jon Faddis but to name a few. Mahlangu is gearing up to present his next body of work that has not been released yet; needless to say, that this will be an Exclusive performance. His

musical presentation will be offering a tribute to his South African mentors’ work, featuring the music of artists such as Herbie Tswoaeli, Afrika Mkhize Nduduzo Makhathini and Abdullah Ibrahim on the first night. And on the second and last night he’ll be presenting the new music that was composed in New York and re-arrangements of some of the work from his first album. Mahlangu says that this music will be showcasing his new insight into the

music and sharing his experiences after the move from Mamelodi to The Big Apple. The theme of his residency will be titled Kgorošo (The Arrival).
