ABOUT

Eye – Screening:

Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (squint) affect between 2% and 4% of all children.  Unfortunately these and other conditions are not always obvious to parents and teachers and can lead to abnormal development of one or even both eyes. For this reason there is an urgent need for all young children to undergo a screening eye-test.

Ideally all children who are at pre-primary schools or nursery schools or even younger should be examined.

Vision testing can be done from age 3 years, and if a problem is detected there is time to correct it. These examinations are performed by a qualified orthoptist and if any abnormalities are detected it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist (eye-specialist)

It is however not necessary to have these tests done

(1)  if your child is presently under treatment for an eye problem    or

(2) if this eye-test or an eye-test by an ophthalmologist has been done within the last year and no problems were found and you do not suspect a problem
