ABOUT

The Brother Moves On is releasing a collaborative project with Matsuli Music in the form of an album entitled Tolika Mtoliki on the 25th of October 2021. To celebrate and share this release the band is embarking on a tour of kindred spaces in Johannesburg, The East Rand, Pretoria and Cape Town. Asylum Studios is such a space, a recording studio in Pretoria which has become the home of The Brother Moves On's work. Come join the band for a BYOB(Bring Your Own Booze) pool party. This event is a no drink and driving event so no vehicles will be permitted on the premises, the Gautrain station is close and convenient so enjoy a day travelling to Pretoria with the band and sitting in the sun enjoying the pool.

About Tolika Mtoliki

The songs on the forthcoming album Tolika Mtoliki are critical shards of a fractured sonic, social and political inheritance. They are the sound-work of the elders – Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, the Malopoets, Batsumi, and Philip Tabane, and they come with a blessing from Moses Taiwa Molelekwa. Called into the circle for this session, they speak old wisdom in new voices, and what they have to give is not measured in distance from a so-called original version. These songs are not reducible to reference recordings, nor to staff notation. They are spirits of sound, summoned from the past for the sake of the present, taking up old roles as heralds of a mended future.

Once again, as before, they announce a work of healing.

About Asylum Studios

Asylum Studios was formed in 2001 as a resource for Gauteng bands to rehearse and record in a comfortable and professional environment. Situated just a few minutes from the Garsfontein N1 turnoff, the studio is easily accessible for artists coming from Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

We have since expanded the size of the rehearsal space as well as adapting the recording area to accommodate bands wishing to attain album quality sounds but in a live environment. Our ethos is to encourage bands to record live – not only does this save bands time and money but in the process it also improves the “tightness” of the band.
