ABOUT

National Children’s Theatre is delighted to be presenting Aesop’s Fables, the second production of 2021, in our new healthy, safe, outdoor Imagination Theatre. This is a fresh version of the timeless fables, which have been given a creative spin.

In this production Aesop takes audiences on a trip through some of his most well-loved stories, such as The Fox and the Grapes (known for the origin of the idiom "sour grapes"); the Tortoise and the Hare in a hare-raising adventure of Olympic proportions where the racers undertake one of the most famous contests of all time. In fact although there are 725 fables in total, we will include only three more: The Boy who cried Wolf, The Lion and the Mouse, and The Ant and the Grasshopper.

The fables were originally handed down from person-to-person, both for entertainment purposes and as a means of relaying or teaching a moral or lesson. This NCT offering expands on the educational side through the magical story telling abilities of four professional actors, namely Ashleigh Butcher, Bradley Hartmann, Dezlenne Ulster-Weale and Justin Swartz, who demonstrate that the theatre is a great place to see cautionary tales unfold in an interesting, memorable and meaningful way.

NCT aims to educate young audiences through the powers of entertainment and imagination whilst at the same time, encouraging children to question and think for themselves. The fables spark conversations about morals, storytelling, and discussions about right and wrong in a risk-free way!

Moira Katz, CEO of National Children's Theatre, comments that “the educational aspect of the fables is a great opportunity for parents and teachers to chat with children about the transfer of lessons from page to stage to real life.”

NCT is thrilled to welcome creative, multi-talented Weslee Lauder to direct the play, Musical Director is Louis Zurnamer, set and costumes are by veteran NCT loyal heavyweights Stan Knight and Sarah Roberts. Reginah Dube-Shubane is the Stage Manager.

Brimming with audience participation and character education, the production provides an energizing, warm and fun learning experience, says Director Weslee. “This is a celebration of how fresh, bold and vibrant the classics remain today.”
