ABOUT

The workshop's idea is to teach opera singers how to become self-sufficient through their craft in the COVID-era.

The workshop will take place over three Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm in Parys (just over an hour's drive from Johannesburg). The first two Saturdays will be theory, and the third will be a masterclass.

On the first day, I will cover everything you need to know about making sure you present the best stage package. Topics will include:

* Know your instrument (voice)

* Physical appearance

* Repertoire knowledge

* Know your audience

* Opera trends and industry knowledge

* How to build a varied repertoire

* How to build a presence

* How to engage your audience

The second Saturday will be all about marketing and how to produce your own concert or small opera. Topics will include:

* Financial management for performing artists

* How to use media relationships for exposure on radio/TV

* Networking - peer, industry, business

* How to produce a concert

- Realistic revenue expectations and budgeting

- Determining a ticket price

- The elements of an event poster

- How to select the right venue

- How to be cost-effective

- Important advertising and marketing principles

- Program compilation

_ Printed programmes

The last day will take the form of a masterclass. The masterclass is not to work on technical vocal ability but to work on the practical application of the first day's content. Each delegate will prepare two arias and present them as if for a live performance—one with piano accompaniment and the other with a backing track. I will then work on interpretation, stage personality, audience engagement, and more to help the singer create the best possible stage package.

There are two options for attendance.

Option 1: Full workshop in-person attendance (3 days)

R2,700 per person (R900 per day)

It includes refreshments and lunch, a printed textbook/manual, and a pianist for the masterclass. Delegates are limited to six (6) singers to comply with COVID-regulations.

Option 2: Virtual attendance (2 days)

R1,500 per person (R750 per day)

Virtual delegates will receive a Zoom link and password and follow the workshop live for the first and second Saturday. This option excludes the masterclass on the third Saturday, and delegates will not receive a textbook/manual.

The first workshop will be in June on the 5th, 12th, and 19th. For inquiries, please WhatsApp or call Marisa on 0649635386
