Keep Fighting for Deon!

Thank you for taking the time to check out this page...

Please read my brother Deon's story - he is SO close to our hearts!!!

So after Deon started feeling some numbness in his legs and arms in May 2019, he went to hospital and the Doctor arranged for him to have an URGENT operation the next day...An E.Coli bacteria entered his bloodstream and decided to live and grow in his Spinal cord causing a large abscess. The abscess had to be removed surgically, which was done wonderfully by the Doctors of the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town - but unfortunately not without the abscess causing extensive damage.... Doctors believed that Deon would most likely be a paraplegic for the rest of his life - they were not even convinced that he would ever be able to breathe on his own again! They basically prepared us for the worst.

Since May 2019 Deon has made progress that can only be described as being a miracle. He can use his arms and hands (to an extent), is able to move his toes and lift his legs to some extent. It has been a year and a half since the operation that changed both our lives and his forever.

He moved out of rehab at the start of April 2020 into an angel’s home....Tanja is Deon’s friend – and also a person that we call OUR ANGEL!! Deon’s whole family lives in Pretoria, and we would have been more than willing to take him in, but he did not want to leave Cape Town as his children also live there. His son Nico is 23, his other son Willow is 12 and his daughter’s name is Lilly – she is only 3 years old.

Tanja made the decision to take Deon in. She moved out of her own place into a place big enough to accommodate Deon. Tanja has a full time job, 3 children of her own, and she still makes time to see to every need that Deon has when she's not at work! As a family we have been paying for his half of the rent, electricity, his toiletries and food, as well as the nurse that looks after him during the day - Tannie Lizzie...also an Angel in Deon's life! Tanja does all that she does without asking for anything in return. His children visit him every weekend, but as he is in a wheelchair, Tanja entertains them, and cooks for them, and looks after them as well. She literally gave up her freedom for a friend that was in need. She even sleeps on the couch next to his room so that she can wake up if he needs her...

We had a charity event in December 2019 to raise money to cover all of this as Deon is not on a Medical Aid - and due to his current condition, he is unable to work. The charity event (plus a few donations we received) was very successful and covered his expenses for almost a year. His monthly expenses is currently R8 500 per month.

We are his only support system (financially) and due to Covid and a lot of us actually struggling to get back on our feet, we need help.

Please help us as a family, to help Tanja look after Deon!!

• Deon has an amazing testimony to share;

• He has a life to live;

• He has a purpose that has not yet been fulfilled; and

• He is alive today because there is a bigger plan for his life!!!

Deon is slowly recovering to a certain extent - it will however take a very long time to recover in such a way that he will be independent - if that is ever going to be attained. It is a heavy burden for his parents, who are 2 pensioners, to carry. Thus his main need at this stage is financial assistance.

Thank you for your kind attention!!
