ABOUT

Robben Island Museum (RIM) and the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) indicate that one of the central values in digitising African archives is giving access to African scholars, researchers and content creators. Numerous limitations restricting African researcher’s to travel to and access archival sites, means there are currently more non-African scholars, researchers and content creators accessing and engaging African archives.

In this close conversation we ask what it takes to both give and sustain access to African creators and researchers through digitising African archives and heritage. An exploration of not only what is required to digitise African archives, but which models, both conceptual and commercial, are being put in place to ensure sustained engagement by African researchers and creators. Furthermore, how does this equate to engagement that goes beyond access, to empower these African users in their work through the digital encounters.
