ABOUT

16 Kays for 16 Days is an event that we run annually, leading up to the national 16 Days of Activism campaign, to raise funds and awareness for our local Community Intervention Centre (CIC), based at the Tableview SAPS building, who assist victims of abuse.

The CIC support our local SAPS (Melkbos, Milnerton & Tableview) Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) as well as the Mediclinic Milnerton and Netcare Blaauwberg Hospitals. They serve the Blaauwberg Community (Table View, Milnerton and Melkbos SAPS jurisdiction which includes Joe Slovo and Dunoon informal settlements. People from other areas are welcome to use their services but they have to meet with them at one of the mentioned police stations. Their core function is to assist victims of crime which may include exposure to - armed robberies, high-jackings, sexual offences like rape or assault, domestic violence, suicide, attempted suicide, murder, family crisis, death, and severe medical trauma.

The idea to raise funds for them by walking was started by John Farelo back in 2014 and he has taken on various challenges over the years by walking different distances each time. In 2019 we decided to involve other walkers and runners from our community in his initiative and the 16 Kays for 16 Days idea was born.

This year John will walk 16kms every day for 16 days in a row starting on Friday the 13th of November 2020 and you are invited to join him on his journey to raise awareness by choosing your own daily distance, something that you feel comfortable committing to, whether that is 1km or 20kms a day, it's completely up to you. Raise awareness by asking friends, family and colleagues to join you and letting people know, however you feel comfortable, what you are up to and why.

All participants are invited to share photos of their own journey on social media and tag the 16 Kays for 16 Days Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/16kaysfor16days/ or join the Facebook group and post your photos and stories there https://www.facebook.com/groups/690415474858456

We will also have a WhatsApp Group running for the duration of the event for those participants who feel they may need the encouragement from fellow participants to keep going.

At the end of the event each participant will receive a special, commemorative medal in thanks for their support. If you belong to a running club we will send your medal to your club for distribution otherwise we will be in contact with you directly about delivery / collection.
