Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to - The Goukou River Triathlon!


Come join us as we battle it out on the mighty Goukou River, the gravel hills of the GK Roads and the never ending Heartbreak Hill.


When all is said and done, we'll celebrate the heroes of the day and make time for beers, braais, borewors and banter.


Cape Town DJs will be on site providing good tunes until 11:30pm when Minister Dlamini-Zuma sends us to bed.

From the N2: Take the Stilbaai turnoff onto R305

For Gravel Road: Travel 21km on R305 to Melkhoutkraal turnoff (right)

Travel 9.3km to a T-Junction, turn left onto Waterblom Drive

Travel 7.2km and turn left onto Rivermist Farm / Wild Olive Farm

Keep right for parking

(All roads from Melkhoutkraal turnoff are gravel)

For Tar/Paved/Gravel: Travel 25.8km to Stilbaai via R305

Turn right at the circle and cross the bridge

Turn immediately right (Waterblom drive)

Travel 11.3km and turn left onto Rivermist Farm / Wild Olive Farm

Keep right for parking

(The tar road becomes a paved road and then a gravel road)


RACE DETAILS:

*Choose whether to go solo or team up and relay the race


Sprint distance: 800m river swim / 20km dirt road cycle / 5km trail run


Olympic distance: 1500m river swim / 40km dirt road cycle / 10km trail run


Competitors should know that the cycle takes place on mountainous and hilly / undulating roads. Beginner mountain bikers cycle cautiously, seasoned cyclist are urged to maintain safe speeds through corners and down hills. The run takes place on steep gravel roads and trails. All runners are encouraged to watch their step on technical sections and to be cautious on steep sections. Trail running shoes strongly recommended.

PLEASE NOTE - if entering to do two legs, teaming up with one person - you are required to purchase an individual ticket; your teammate will enter as a one person team - please email us with any such special arrangements.

ACCOMMODATION: we suggest staying for the weekend. There are a number of stunning guest farms along the river, and limited camping spots will be available for those who are willing to rough it.

PARTICIPANTS


We are inviting and catering for anything between 50 and 300 competitors across both the individual and team sections and both distances. Owing to the uncertainty brought on by Covid-19, Government Lockdown and Alert Levels and the fact that this is the first year the event is public, it is difficult to speculate on participant numbers.


PRIZES


Category winners, podium finishers and lucky draw winners can look forward to modest prizes including wine, farm produce and sports equipment - this is not the race to put you into comfortable retirement.


GENERAL QUERIES


WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE RACE VENUE?

The race will be held at River Mist Farm (34°18'36.9"S 21°19'51.8"E) in the Gou Kou River Valley, Stilbaai. There will be a campsite where there are ablution blocks and campsites available. Designated parking areas will be made available to all ticket holding competitors and spectators

WHAT FOOD/DRINK IS AVAILABLE AT THE RACE VENUE?


FOOD

We have a foodtruck coming that will provide boerewors rolls, hamburgers, chips.

Attendees and athletes have access to cooking and braai facilities.

The purchase of general goods such as wood, bread, milk etc. are not available on site but can be purchased in town (+/- 10km away).


Wild Olive Farm (next to Rivermist) caters; other small food vendors have been invited.


ALCOHOL

PLEASE NOTE No competitors and attendees may bring their own drinks and alcohol. 

We have a temporary liquor license for the event allowing us to sell beer and limited drinks from an enclosed bar. The bar accepts cash and card payment.

WHAT TIME WILL THE PRIZEGIVING CELEBRATION FINISH?

Due to covid-19 regulations, we have a hard curfew of midnight. Last round at the Beer Tent will be 11pm, venue will be vacated at 11:30pm. The Gou Kou River Valley is a quiet and idyllic venue and we will try, where possible, to keep noise pollution to a minimum.


RACE QUERIES


SWIM: CAN ATHLETES WEAR WET SUITS IN THE LONG SWIM?

Yes. The River is tidal and quite warm, wet suits are optional.


SWIM: ARE SWIM CAPS PROVIDED FOR THE SWIMMERS?

No. Swim caps are compulsory - please bring your own swim cap


IS IT A MOUNTAIN BIKE OR A ROAD BIKE COURSE?

The bike leg takes place on (at times very) rough gravel roads - there is no single track. The road is very hilly and deeply rutted. Mountain bikes are recommended; gravel bikes may be appropriate. Though permitted, lunatics piloting road bikes will be laughed at.


CAN WE DRAFT ON THE BIKE LEG?

Yes, but don’t be selfish, share the load.


WILL TRI-BARS AND TRI-BIKES BE ALLOWED?

Yes. You can race on whatever bicycle takes your fancy (e-bikes, will frowned upon and times not official)

You understand that participation in sport (swim, cycle, run) and related sporting activities, are at your own risk and that the organisers of the Goukou River Valley Triathlon, their agents and representatives will not be held liable for any illness, injury, death or loss of property.


You are healthy and have no known medical conditions that could prevent you from participation in sporting activities.


You indemnify the Goukou River Valley Triathlon, their agents and representatives against all and any action of whatever nature, which may arise out of my participation in any activities, training sessions or events organised or promoted by the Goukou River Valley Triathlon, their agents and representatives.


More particularly, you acknowledge and agree to the following:


Risks associated with the event

The Goukou Triathlon has many participants ranging from professionals to novices.

The event will attract large numbers, though less than 500, of participants and spectators, parts of the event take place at high speeds on courses over varied terrain that could include urban areas, nature reserves, mountainous terrain and gravel roads. Participants and spectators accept that the Goukou Triathlon organisers, agents and employees cannot manage all potential risks, even foreseen ones, otherwise it would not be feasible to organise an event.

YOU THEREFORE UNDERSTAND AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE ARE RISKS AND HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH AN EVENT OF THIS NATURE AND THAT THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF THESE RISKS CAN RANGE FROM MINOR INJURIES TO SEVERE INJURIES TO DEATH, AND IN RELATION TO YOUR PROPERTY CAN RANGE FROM MINOR DAMAGE TO SEVERE DAMAGE TO COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OR LOSS.

Limitation of Liability and Indemnity

This Limitation of Liability and Indemnity applies to all participants and is in favour of us and other parties that may be indicated. It does not matter who or how you entered for an event.

Each entrant warrants that he/she has not been suspended or banned from participating in an event.

You understand and acknowledge that you attend, enter and/or participate in the Goukou River Triathlon entirely at your own risk and each participant is obliged to strictly adhere to all applicable rules, directives and instructions of the organisers of the event.

TO THE EXTENT PERMISSIBLE BY LAW, EACH PARTICIPANT AND / OR SPECTATOR ACCEPTS THAT THE GOUKOU RIVER TRIATHLON, THEFLIPP CC, THEIR EMPLOYEES AND STAFF ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY OR LIABILITY FOR AND AGREES TO INDEMNIFY THESE ENTITIES FROM AND AGAINST, ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, INJURY, DISABILITY, DEATH, EXPENSE, COST OR LIABILITY OF WHATSOEVER NATURE SUFFERED BY THEM, HIS/HER ESTATE AND/OR HIS/HER DEPENDENTS WHICH IN ANY MANNER, IN WHOLE OR IN PART, ARISING DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY FROM HIS/HER PARTICIPATION IN THE EVENT OR ANY OF THE ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED THEREWITH OR INCIDENTAL THERETO, USE OF FACILITIES AND/OR AMENITIES OR BY REASON OF DEFECTIVE MATERIAL OR EQUIPMENT OR BY WAY OF ANY HUMAN OR MECHANICAL ERROR, DEFAULT OR FAILURE OR FROM ANY OTHER CAUSE WHATSOEVER.

WE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ACCEPT LIABILITY FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR AGGRAVATED DAMAGE.

THE EVENT IS ORGANISED ON A BEST EFFORT BASIS AND ALL WARRANTIES AS TO THE QUALITY OF THE EVENT ARE DISCLAIMED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMISSIBLE AT LAW.

YOU AGREE THAT THIS LIMITATION OF OUR LIABILITY APPLIES TO YOU, YOUR ESTATE AND YOUR DEPENDENTS.

The content of the Limitation of Liability and Indemnity must be interpreted to the extent necessary to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008. If a court finds that any part of this Limitation of Liability and Indemnity is void such finding will only apply to that part and the rest will remain valid and binding.

Third Party Indemnity

You agree to indemnify the third parties that act as our service providers for events that we organise and you participate in from and against any loss, damage, injury, disability, death, expense, cost or liability of whatsoever nature suffered by you, your estate and/or your dependents which in any manner, in whole or in part, arise directly or indirectly from your participation in or attendance at the event or any of the activities associated therewith or incidental thereto, use of facilities and/or amenities or by reason of defective material or equipment or by way of any human or mechanical error, default or failure or from any other cause whatsoever and any claims as a result of loss suffered.

Doctors, paramedics and other medical personnel who attend to you at the event do so independently from us and they are not our representatives or contractors. It is your choice to make use of these services and you do so at your own risk.
